Here is a really interesting use of camera tracking to produce a new 3D approach to graffiti. “the “Tagged in Motion” project, which builds a bridge between real graffiti art and its virtual depiction. The centre of attention is the graffiti artist DAIM, who co-created the nextwall. Equipped with the appropriate technology, DAIM sprays graffiti into empty space. In a large hall, three cameras using Motion Capturing record DAIM’s position and the movements he executes with a virtual spray can. The assimilated data is shown to him in real time in a pair of video glasses — as free-floating 3D graffiti in space. In this way he can decide how and where to apply his strokes, and via a Bluetooth controller can also determine the colours, strength of brushstrokes and textures of his work.” You can find out more about the project and the technology issued at the web site www.nextwall.net

from www.youtube.com

In addition here is a nice video clip on the Nextwall project: “On 10 April 2007 the green light was given: for five days the creation of the 30-metre long “nextwall” graffiti created by DAIM, SEAK, TASEK, Daddy Cool and DESUR was broadcast live on the Internet.

Lots of creative ideas on and along with the nextwall are to follow until the end of 2008. These include, for example, a mobile phone guide that explains details of the graffiti to the user; or the “I was here” camera, with which visitors can immortalize themselves on the Internet. In addition, some of the very latest technologies will be tried out: from object recognition and RFID to laser projection. “

Asus Eee PC Note Book February 11, 2008

Here is an interesting new release from Asus that could be a winner? A tiny notebook computer with solid state memory, built in web cam and wireless connectivity for around £200. The $200 PC has been talked about for a long time but this one looks like it could actually be viable. It is not unlike Apple’s new MacBook Air in that it doesn’t have a CD drive is very light and uses solid state memory, but much cheaper.

The other thing this PC has going for it is that it comes with Linux and a suite of open source software, no sign of a Microsoft product anywhere.

“The Eee PC doesn’t use a Microsoft operating system, which is part of the reason it’s so inexpensive. Instead, Asus supplies its own Linux-based graphical user interface. The laptop also ships with some 40 applications, which is arguably more than you’d get with a standard Windows laptop. It includes Firefox for browsing the Web, Skype, OpenOffice and SMPlayer for video playback.

Obviously, it being a Linux machine, users can download any amount of open source software — so long as it’ll fit on the hard drive. The Eee PC is theoretically fast enough to run Windows XP”

For £200 you can’t really go wrong. More info here.

I have just set up a Flickr site for my photos, it’s a nice way to produce a portfolio site for your images, but also you can tag images with the locations they were taken in. You can be extremely detailed in how you tag your images and build up a visual profile of the locations you visited. Many photographers use Flickr as a way of showing and selling their work, photos can be published in a range of sizes and resolutions for others to download.

Trip to Tate Modern January 28, 2008

Back in November we visited Tate Modern. This is one of my favorite pieces on exhibition by Chuck Close the American photo realist painter and photographer. He works from a wheel chair after a blood clot left him paralyzed. His paintings are large scale and he works painstakingly square at a time holding the brush with his teeth. At first they look as though they are taken from computer pixelated imagery but Close’s work goes back before computer based images became common place. When viewed in detail the paintings appear to be random squiggles laid out in a grid of squares. Each square gives an average hue that make sense from a distance.
